Let’s gain some height this morning! After the pick up at your hotel in Barcelona, we will start our trip sensationally by a hot air balloon flight over the Prades natural park, which is the northern part of the Priorat wine region. A perfect way to understand the topography and the complexity of this terroir and its geological formations.

Once back on the ground we will head to Falset, the capital of the Priorat region, for a relaxing lunch in the garden of the Hotel des Sports, THE classic Bistrot of the Priorat.

After lunch, we will start a gentle hike through the fruit trees, vineyards, and in the shade of the chestnut trees. An amazing trail which will help you understand and witness the famous slade stone of the Priorat “Licorella”.

The trail will take us through the vines of Mas Martinet, one of the 5 best-rated wineries of the Priorat and part of the 5 families that put the region back on the map of the world’s top wines. Chemma will host us and drive around the estate with her 4WD to show their “heroic way of winemaking”. After having tasted some wines directly from the barrels and, of course, from the bottles, we will drive to the hotel and enjoy the tranquility of this very special place.

The origins of heroic viticulture

This morning we will make our way through the origins of the Priorat. A breathtaking hike of 12 km along the heights overlooking the entire region and passing through the monastery of Cartoixa where the monks of the chartreuse order first planted their wines in the area all the way back in the 11th century.

For lunch we will go to a typical restaurant in the village of La Morera where all the ingredients used are handpicked in the gardens around the village.

After lunch we will walk back to Scala Dei, an even smaller village (32 souls registered there… for more than 1000 wine barrels, at least) and there we will visit the famous Scala Dei winery. Paul, our wine connoisseur will explain the history of the cellar which is closely related to the history of the area. Paul, as usual, will be keen to open some bottles and some barrels for us to understand the different flavours and complexities of those grapes. Walking the two kilometers between the cyprus trees back to the hotel there’s no way you won’t fall in love with the stunningly beautiful hills of the Priorat.

Tonight we will have dinner in a very special place situated in a village called Siurana, founded by the Knights Templar on the heights of the Montsant hills, considered to be the sacred mountains of the Priorat. Siurana is a medieval town and we will have dinner in a garden with a view on those stunning mountains.

But, on the way to our dinner, we want to show you one of the most innovative wineries of the Priorat. Perinet winery enjoys three different microclimates and gives birth to a very special type of grenache that defines this instantly recognizable, structured wine

This morning we will meet Marc, our sailor captain in the harbour of Cambrils on the gleaming Mediterranean sea. We’ll board Flor de Loto, his beautiful wooden sailboat, for a sail along the coast. Pretty much the perfect spot for a swim in the warm waters of the sea, or having a glass of Garnatxa Blanca on the deck, and if we are lucky enough we will contemplate dolphins swimming along with us.

wind will push us towards the delta of the Ebro, the longest and biggest river in Spain. An amazing ecosystem where the sea and the flatlands blend infinitely. Salted swamps full of flamingos and myriad different species of birds will be today’s background.
This is where we meet Sofia. A Portuguese biologist who fell in love with these lands some 20 years ago, studying rice culture in this special ecosystem. We will visit her estate, and the bird watching observatory that they have installed there, and of course we will have to taste the famous Paella from the Delta.

From there, we will get on our bikes and ride through the rice fields to a traditional restaurant in a place where paella is cooked in a woodfire oven. After lunch we will ride a bit more between the sea, the salt swamps and the rice fields, a flat and beautiful wonder.

Following that, we will go up into the mountains of the Matarrañas to our top sustainable Relais & Chateaux hotel “La torre del Visco” where Candela will, after a wonderful dinner on the terrace, bring everything necessary for a star gazing night, and she will enlighten us with her infinite knowledge of the stars and old mythologies.

Our itinerary today will bring us to a very special place… the dream come true of a French and Spanish couple. We will then head early to the hotel for you to enjoy the pool and a visit to the estate which is gorgeous.

After a lazy morning in the quietness of your hotel, Tamzin, an elegant British lady and horse rider, will come to lead us for a horseback ride through the superb and wild nature of the Matarraña. The best way to experience the remoteness of this unspoiled and preserved part of Spain. We will ride along vineyards, olive trees, stunning waterfalls and Mediterranean woods, all the way to Luis’s estate. Luis cultivates grapes and olives and produces excellent oil and wine which will be the basis of our rural, exquisite lunch.

In the afternoon we want to invite you to a silent walk in a totally unspoiled place of nature, an easy walk along a turquoise river in the middle of a canyon, a perfect place to reconnect with yourself, with walking meditation in the heart of nature. Then, have ice cream in Beceite, this charming little medieval town where old stones fit well with all the natural springs around the village.

This morning we want to show you the wonderful city of Zaragoza, its stunning Catedral La Virgen del Pilar, one of the most venerated temples in Spain, famous for its colorful tiles …but also the Ajafería, a smaller version of the Alhambra in Andalucia with receives almost no visitors, and is clearly a hidden gem of Spain’s Moorish heritage. We will enjoy lunch in the old city-center. Then we will bring you to the train station where you can catch the high speed train to Madrid and its international airport, as well as the train to Barcelona.
